As I lazily slapped a tinted moisturizer on my face this morning, it occurred to me that I don’t often change products when I find one that just does the job every single time. I tend to find a little gem that does the trick, and this blush from MAC Cosmetics, Breath of Plum, is that gem.
Let me begin by explaining my #struggle. I am super pale. We’re talking Snow White after a bleach bath pale. It’s difficult for me to find a blush shade that isn’t too intense or that looks odd in contrast with such fair skin. I wanted something that looked fresh and polished and youthful, not orangey or vibrant. I craved a muted shade that flattered my whiteness rather than highlighting the downsides of that. I’ve always loved the rich plumy shades that I see on women with darker complexions, and I wanted something that worked like that on me. Thus, we find the heart of the problem: I needed sheerness.
Breath of Plum is a little on the expensive side (though not for high end, but seeing as I only own a couple of expensive blushes, it seems like I’m shelling out a lot of dough) at $22. It certainly isn’t drugstore, but it’s not like Chanel level pricy or anything.
The color is a silky, cool-toned, sheer, plum shade that is just a tint of color on the cheeks. The powder itself is silken and smooth, relatively pigmented, though not overly so. It feels soft on the skin and glides over powders, but if you’re wearing a liquid foundation, I recommend letting it set up and dry a bit first before applying this. However, this lasts all day and looks so natural and glorious plummy on the skin. The best (and most banal, clichéd) way to describe this is the “I just played in the snow on a cold day” blush.
I’ve used this blush almost exclusively for over a year and I don’t foresee that changing any time soon. I highly recommend!
