I know it happens to the best of us… Lion Hair! Lion Hair is basically when your hair just gets soooo frizzy, that you have a minor resemblance to a lion. But fear not, my fuzzy-headed kitties! There is a way to beat the frizz! There are several hair helper tricks I am going to teach you! These tips also depend on your hair type and amount of time you are willing to invest!
Trick#1: Use a leave in conditioner! This is the most basic trick of the trade! Leave in conditioners are relatively inexpensive, work great, and are quick and easy! I really love the leave in conditioners from Aveda, John Frieda, Garnier, Aussie, and Got2Be! Just spritz or massage into the ponytail region of your hair when your hair is damp. Then brush through your hair with a wide toothed comb in order to detangle and prevent breakage. Be sure to avoid the roots because it may cause your hair to look greasy!
Trick#2: Use heat protectant! I cannot stress the importance of this step! Most if not all girls heat style their hair! Heat styling is fun and is a great way to mix up your everyday hair routine! It is absolutely fine, if you take the time to protect your hair from the damaging effects of hot tools. I adore the TreSemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray! It works great, is easily accessible, and is inexpensive! What could be better? Spray heat protectant on your hair and brush it through before you use any hot tool! Also if you can, use a lower heat setting on your tool because it is chemically impossible to create a heat protectant that protects your hair past 390 degrees! It is also in general far less damaging and drying to use lower heat settings. Just some food for thought!
Trick #3: Skip the towel! As fun as it is to look like a freak with your hair piled on top of your head, wrapped up turban style, it can actually cause frizziness! The friction when you move your head between your hair and your towel can cause breakage and make your head look like a cotton ball! A much better alternative is to squeeze the excess water out of your mane while standing in the tub, comb your hair out with a wide tooth comb, and let it air dry naturally!
Trick #4: Pass on the blow dryer! Blow dryers are great in a pinch but ultimately, they cause breakage, damage, and frizz! If used with heat protectant, the damaging effects can be greatly lessened, and if you blow your hair out once it is 70% or more dry the breakage and damage is reduced. The frizz how ever is difficult to combat! Unless you are a pro, have time to fix with another heat tool later, or have a blow drying cream (such as Living Proof, Redken, or Chi) I would skip the blow drying whenever possible!
Trick#5: Deep condition those locks! Throughout the the week, our poor hair is exposed to the elements, heat tools, and a million other things! Why shouldn’t we help heal our manes with a luxurious deep conditioner? Deep conditioners are basically conditioners that you apply while in the bath or shower (you can do them outside of the tub but then it can get really messy!) that penetrate deep into your hair to repair, treat, reconstruct, and hydrate your locks! My favorite deep conditioning treatment is the Aussie 3-Minute Miracle (you can buy it at any drugstore or grocery store for $3!)! You can also make an amazing hair masque/deep conditioner at home with ingredients you probably already have lying around in your kitchen! Just use the meat of half an avocado (put it into a bowl and mash with a fork), one tablespoon of honey (mix into the mashed avocado), and one tablespoon of olive oil (mix in with the honey and avocado mixture)! Then apply all through your hair, clip on top of your head, and relax for 10 minutes! Then rinse out and follow up with your daily conditioner!
I hope all of these tricks help you tame your mane! Adios from me and the lion!
